Day 11

Image
Today is New Years Eve.  I had another session today (#4).  Nothing particularly notable or different.    I was excited today to finish the year at my lowest weight in more than 6 year.  The line at the bottom is for 2020. Breakfast: nutrition shake as assigned Lunch: Double meat/double cheese/double bacon whataburger - no bun Dinner - finger foods (shrimp, salami, cheese, raw broccoli, raw carrots, celery, hummus)

Day 10

Image
Not anything significant to report today- no real changes either way.  I'm including a picture of my blood sugars for the last 12 months.   The different colors represent the different times of day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime) Notice the tight cluster at the far right- this is the data recorded since i started treatment.

Day 9

Today was the ninth day since treatment started- third time to actually receive treatment.  To resolve the cliff hanger from yesterday, i asked Dr Buckley about the pain in my feet and he said it was expected.   He explained that as nerves start to repair themselves, there will be cycles.  His advice was not to worry if it was a high cycle (no pain) or a low cycle (like yesterday's pain), but instead to celebrate that nerves are starting to feel something.  It doesn't make sense to me, and I've determined already Dr Buckley is a happy optimist.... but i resolved before i started i will stay the course and do everything they instruct.  As for the treatment itself- i actually felt the laser for VERY brief moments on my palm and fingers.   If this were the end state, i wouldn't be happy... but to see a different response already on just the third session (they told me not to expect much until about session 8) leaves me hopeful.   I did not ...

Day 8

Today was a day of confirmation- confirming what i suspected yesterday- my neuropathy is feeling different at different times of day.  As I've said before, when i started the program, it was constant tingling/numbness- nothing made it better, nothing made it worse.   It didn't matter if it was morning or evening, it just *was*. Today was a different experience though.  My day started with the same tingling/numbness I've had for months, but as the morning progressed SOME (not all) of my fingers and toes actually felt pretty good for a few minutes... almost normal.   I say almost because they still tingled, but it wasn't as strong.   On the other hand, a litte bit after lunch, it came back with a hearty vengeance.  My toes had  pain to the point i had to use a shiatsu foot massager for almost a half hour to find some relief.  I'll try to remember to ask Dr. Buckley about it tomorrow.  Breakfast : assigned supplement shake Lunch: ...

Day 7

Today was Sunday, so it is normally my most relaxed day of the week.   This gave me time to really pay attention today to the peripheal sensations.  Today i noticed while sitting in church- roughly 1 hour after the daily morning light therapy- that some of my toes actually felt decent... at least momentarily.  My fingers still felt mostly the same.   Going the other direction, after 20 minutes on the elliptical tonight followed immediately by light therapy, my toes felt almost like they were burning.... and even getting into bed, the sheets against my toes wasn't painful, but it was uncomfortable.  :-( Breakfast : assigned supplement shake Lunch: Roast.  Carrots.  Riced cauliflower. Dinner:  Roast.  Green beans.  Salad. Exercise: 20 minutes on the elliptical  Glucose: 98 (breakfast), 95 (lunch), 91 (dinner), 92 (bedtime) Weight: 237.1

Day 6

Six days into the program.  The sharp pain in my hip when i bend over is largely gone now- that's a good thing.   As for the tingling/numbness in my fingers and toes- it's still as steady and constant as when i started.   If i were to consider deeply, it MIGHT be a little less intense in the morning- whereas before treatment, it was most certainly constant.  If it has changed, it's not enough difference to excite me yet. In other news, we went to a state park- just over an hour down the road from my house- to hike today.  After the hike, we stopped to eat lunch at Braums.  I ordered a bunless double cheeseburger with bacon and a side salad.  I learned that- contrary to the internet- Braums does NOT put romaine lettuce in place of the bun.  Instead, they served it to me in a stryofoam box- so it was more like a hamburger salad.  I also ordered the balsamic vinigrette dressing with my side salad only to realize later that the dressing...

Day 5 - Christmas

Image
I really need Christmas and the new year to be in the rear view mirror so i can have less temptation.  My failure to be strict with my diet yesterday showed up on the scale today.  Even today, i still ate "two" breakfasts, and i ate two small cookies- together smaller than my palm- but the homemade cranberry+white chocolate+macadamia nut+oatmeal brought delightful bliss.  I had the will power to pass on the mini-tacos the family ate for dinner, but i wasn't happy about it.   Their dinner smelled so much better than mine.  :-( Breakfast : assigned supplement shake + fritata & bacon Lunch: Salad (lettuce, bell peppers,  cheddar cheese, turkey, fried jalapenos), 2 small cookies Dinner: chicken leg+thigh, cucumbers, raw carrots, olives stuffed with garlic Exercise: easy family walk for 20 minutes Glucose: 99 (breakfast), --* (lunch), 100 (dinner), 107 (bedtime) Weight: 238.3 * - forgot to measure

Day 4 - Christmas Eve

Image
Today was a mixed bag.   This morning, the scale showed a MASSIVE drop in weight... i weighed in 3 lbs lower than yesterday- my lowest weight in more than 5 years.  That's the good... now comes the not so good.   Today was Christmas Eve and we had our family over for Christmas dinner like we do every year.   The problem is that Keto is not compatible with a Christmas dinner.   Things on the table that didn't work for me included sugar glazed ham, stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, Hawaiian rolls, fruit salad, mac-n-cheese, pies, cookies & candies.  That left me with green bean casserole, salad and turkey.  My plate and my palate were both sad... to say i was disappointed would be gravely understating my emotion.  To be entirely transparent and document everything, i did cheat today.  :-(   I had about 2 Tbsp of mashed potatoes and 2 Tbsp of stuffing with gravy + 1 oz of chocolate brittle a...

Day 3

Image
So i started today with 20 minutes of red light treatment on my hands and 20 minutes on my feet.   This seemed to be more comfortable to me because the red light machine felt really hot to my hands halfway through the treatment when i did hands second.   When i went to the office, we did a repeat of the previous sessions- a 20 minute session with the red light devices in the office and the electromagnetic therapy.  After that they used the massager to break up scar tissue followed by the laser.  I couldn't feel the laser on the majority of either foot- with only an occasional and brief ability to feel the heat.  Switching to hands... like before, the laser sensation was much hotter in the back of my hands, yet barely noticeable on my palms and fingers.   Dr Buckley advised me to adjust my home red light sessions to 10 minutes each instead of 20.  He also advised they would be stopping the massager on my feet- which really ple...

Day 2

Image
So the treatment plan requires activity at home- and today was the first day.   They have 4 different supplements that i take: 1) there is a vanilla shake as a breakfast (or with). 2) there is a orange liquid i take that they call a neurorecharge 3) there are drops that i take twice a day with meals as a metabolism booster 4) there is a detox drink i take every night 2 hours before bed.  In future posts, I'll describe each of these in more detail.  In addition to the supplements, i also perform red light therapy twice/day.  Each session is 20 minutes for my hands + 20 minutes for feet- so thats nearly 90 minutes/day of light therapy. Light therapy: 2 sessions @ 40 minutes each.   feet+hand session in the morning, feet + hand session in the evening Breakfast: assigned supplement shake Lunch: steak (yes, just meat) Dinner: chicken fajita fiesta salad (from Rosa's Tortilla Factory) Exercise: 25 minutes on elliptical Glucose: 105 (breakfast), 89 (lunch), 9...

Day 1

Image
So i started treatment yesterday... it was a mixed bag.  Treatment started with some electromagnetic therapy and some kind of light therapy.  After 20 minutes of this, we moved to another room where they used a really intense vibrator to break up any scar tissue that might exist.   Finally, they concluded treatments with a warm  laser treatment.  After the physical treatments, the doctor came in to discuss what i felt and didn't feel and discuss a diet plan to accompany treatment.  My initial impression is that i could have purchased the electromagnetic rings and light pads on the internet for a small fraction of the cost of the treatment plan.  I was most disappointed by the diet- it's keto.  I'm not surprised because Dr. Thai advocates keto in his books... and a lot of google searching provides significant evidence supporting the benefits for weight loss, blood sugar control, and yes- neuropathy.  The reason for my dismay is because i ...

Background and setup

Image
My name is Anthony.  I've officially been a type 2 diabetic for 1 year now.   My A1C is relatively controlled- at 6.3- and my fasting glucose across all meals runs around 118.  Despite this, i have had non-stop uninterrupted 24x7 numbness and tingling in my fingers and toes for the last 3-4 months now.   Nothing makes it better.   Nothing makes it worse.   It is simply perpetually there.  Everything i read said this is diabetic peripheral neuropothy- and that doesn't end well.... so i decided i want to do something to interrupt this.    Most material on the internet says that neuropothy is permanent and irreversible- but Dr. Bao Thai says that he is ahead of common medical understanding and he can provide not just relief- but reversal and healing.  During the initial consult, he claims to have a 96% success rate with the patients he accepts.   To his credit, Dr. Bao Thai has 96 google reviews wit...
