Jan 29 - Stopping metformin

I'm a few days late putting this in, but it's easy to recall.   I had my annual physical yesterday (Jan 28) and received my test results today.   Everything came back perfect.  A1C was 5.6.  Cholesterol levels were in the desired ranges also (HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, ratio).  All other blood work came back perfect.   My physician was so exceedingly pleased he said i could stop metformin if i wish and just manage through diet and exercise.

Well i do wish.  Generally speaking, i don't like to take medicine until i MUST.  Just watch any drug commercial on television and see the list of potential side effects often sounds worse than the thing they are treating..... and then there are the ambulance chasing lawyers that run commercials about drugs people used for years that now we find are linked to various cancers.

So while metformin may be a tested medicine with few known side effects- and fewer confirmed.... i just don't want to risk it if i don't have to.

I asked Dr. Buckley at my appt on Feb 2, and he confirmed he also wants me to stay off the metformin if i am able.

Conclusion- that's 2 doctors plus me... so it's unanimous that we all want and me to stop the metformin.  I'll do that and continue to watch my daily glucose closely.

P.S. - do a Google search.  There are some scientists that have done studies suggesting prolonged use of metformin can cause vitamin b12 deficiency.  One symptom of b12 deficiency is tingling fingers and toes- which is almost always misdiagnosed and called diabetic neuropathy.  Now I'm certain that is NOT my issue.   The leading source of vitamin b12 is meat and cheese- and i eat a LOT of it... as in 6-7 days a week.   :-)
